In 2003, a film titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” introduced a character named Captain Jack Sparrow—a charming, cunning, and selfish individual. Describing himself as “definitely dishonest,” he believed that an honest man can be easily fooled anytime, anywhere. Such characters are often referred to as anti-heroes, and they have been popular not only in global cinema but also in Indian comics since the 1990s, featuring iconic characters like Kaal Paheliya, Grand Master Robo, and one such character, “Charlie,” from Tulsi Comics.

Charlie, created by Prince Tumba, is the arch-enemy of Angara, the beloved hero of Tulsi Comics. Charlie, also known as “Bona” due to his short stature, is mocked for it but possesses remarkable powers bestowed upon him by Tumba. His abilities include flying in the air and understanding the language of every creature on Earth. However, he has weaknesses, such as becoming powerless in the dark. Angara, being aware of Charlie’s weaknesses, often traps him in dark places.

Hawa ka Beta

Their first encounter is portrayed in the comic “Angara Ki Takkar,” where Charlie, disguised, attempts to deceive Angara. However, Angara cleverly exposes Charlie’s deceit, and the confrontation ends with Tumba’s demise. Swearing revenge, Charlie escapes, vowing to take revenge on Angara.

Their next encounter occurs in “Angara Aur Kohre Ka Pret,” where Charlie attempts to sacrifice a hundred girls to resurrect Tumba. However, Angara intervenes, preventing the hundredth sacrifice and forcing Charlie to flee again. Charlie’s character invokes a mix of laughter, anger, and a hint of sympathy, making him a complex and intriguing antagonist.

In “Angara Bono Ke Desh Mein,” when Angara is unable to find an old comic, “Angara Ka Inteqam,” where Charlie kills Princess Balar, Charlie’s cruelty is revealed. Angara, in a fit of rage, shatters Charlie into pieces, not once but twice. Despite Charlie’s machine-like nature, he cannot die, and he resumes his quest to defeat Angara in the next comic.

Angara and Charlie’s unique relationship is characterized by the fulfillment of promises made to each other, creating a fascinating dynamic in the world of Indian comics.

Dhananjay resides in Swarnanagari and is also its chief leader. Swarnanagari’s inhabitants have managed to stay hidden from human eyes beneath the sea for thousands of years. Initially, they coexisted with humans and fought against evil. Their ancestors even participated in the Mahabharata war. However, when their city submerged in the sea, they rebuilt it and continued to reside there.

Their knowledge of science and wisdom existed thousands of years ago, and they have progressed further. However, they never shared their knowledge with humans because they feared it would be misused for warfare. Hence, they always remained hidden. Grand Master Robo conducted an experiment underwater, making Swarnanagari visible to Robo, and Dhananjay encountered Dhruv, who was on a mission to bring back the escaped demon Agnimukh. Dhruv collided with Dhananjay, leading him to Swarnanagari.

Dhruv learned about Swarnanagari and sought protection from Robo. Since then, Dhruv and Dhananjay have become friends. While Dhruv has other friends, Dhananjay was the first to help him. Dhruv has also assisted Swarnanagari by capturing their biggest enemy, Chandakala, although he eventually escaped.

He refers to his ability to fire energy blasts from his wrists as his scientific powers rather than magic. He can also withstand most, if not all, physical attacks, like as energy blasts and bullets, thanks to his golden armor.

Dhananjay possesses a golden noose that he keeps tied around his waist. He can create dimensions to travel anywhere within seconds, and an invisible shield protects him. Interestingly, Dhananjay, like Aquaman in Swarnanagari beneath the sea, has a Wonder Woman-like golden lasso that can extend as desired and can create dimensions anywhere, similar to Doctor Strange.

In this way, we can describe him as a combination of these three characters.

Grand Master Robo comics

An ancient Indian civilization submerged millions of years ago, and its inhabitants transformed into marine creatures to live in a glittering aqua city they named Swarn Nagari. The people who live in Swarn Nagari are utterly peaceful and have well developed scientific skills. When Grand Master Robo attempted to attack and seize Swarn Nagari for all the riches after unintentionally finding it, Dhruva aided them. Actually, Robo was carrying out an underwater nuclear missile test when something went awry. Even though he was unable to meet his immediate objective, he discovered Swarn Nagri, which means Golden City, and this became his new objective.

When Dhananjay was looking for a monster that had escaped from Swarn Nagari in Rajnagar, he came across Dhruv. During their fight, he captured Dhruva in his “swarn-pash” (golden trap). He tried to escape, but was commanded to go back to Swarn Nagari immediately. Dhruva, however, was unable to escape the swarn-pash; instead, he managed to trap Dhananjay inside it and force him to bring Dhruva to the Swarn Nagri via his “aayami dwaar” (inter-dimensional gateway).

Upon arriving, Dhruva realized that Grand Master Robo’s forces were encircling the city and volunteered to assist them.

Dhruva assisted the inhabitants of Swarn Nagari in defending their city. They have been pals ever since. And the highly developed Swarn Nagari people implanted a little device that allows Dhruva to breathe and speak underwater as a thank you for his friendship and assistance.

It is said that the Mamba snake does not fear water even after being bitten. However, in this world, there is a terrifying human for whom the venom of this extremely poisonous snake is nothing compared to something lighter than intoxication. The one who dares to cross the path of this dreadful person never survives. In the criminal world, this fearless emperor is known by a single name, Grand Master Robo.

These lines depict the first page of the ‘Grand Master Robo’ comic, revealing the ferocity of Grand Master Robo as soon as the page is turned.

Grand Master Robo’s real name was Robert Sheen. According to police files, Robert Sheen was involved in minor criminal activities, but due to his courage and daring nature, local thugs started considering him their guru. This association led to his downfall. The situation worsened when a dangerous mafia chief, El Salvano, asked him to work together, but Robert Sheen refused, rejecting the lure of El Salvano’s power.

Upon witnessing Robert’s defiance, El Salvano realized that although Robert may not be a current threat, he could become a significant problem in the future. Thus, a bloody game began. Armed with El Salvano’s modern weapons, well-trained men attacked the Robert Gang’s hideout without warning. The members of the Rabat Gang were not prepared for this assault and were easily defeated. However, Robert’s accuracy with his shots proved deadly, and despite running out of ammunition, he continued to overpower El Salvano’s men effortlessly.

Learning to Play with the Generation X.

Seeing this, El Salvano resorted to something that didn’t require a target but sought out its own target. A bomb explosion left Rabat injured, and he was taken to Shielder Nursing Home. The founders of the nursing home, Dr. Shielder and Merian, discovered Rabat’s critical condition. Dr. Shielder, an expert in robotic technology, and Merian, his assistant and lover, decided to treat Rabat using an unconventional method that had never been tested before. Thus, Rabat Sheen transformed into Grand Master Robo.

The first encounter between Robo and Dhruv occurs in the ‘Grand Master Robo’ comics, where Robo attacks the Golden City. Dhruv and Dhannajay join forces to confront him, forcing Robo to retreat. Subsequently, in ‘Black Cat’ and ‘Robo’s Revenge,’ Robo tries to bring his daughter Natasha (formerly known as Commander Natasha in the Robo Gang) back into a life of crime. Still, she escapes with Dhruv’s intervention.

Their conflict is depicted in several comics, where Dhruv, and at times Robo, saves each other’s lives. In ‘Statue’ and ‘Game Over’ comics, Robo is shown becoming ill and creating a clone named ‘Product.’ It wouldn’t be wrong to say that in the future, we might witness conflicts between Dhruv and Product.
