When nature collided with super-science and imperialist forces

Can a powerful country crush the freedom of a self-respecting island solely on the basis of its highly advanced technology and magical powers, or, when nature rises up to save its existence, are even the greatest imperialist intentions shattered like straw? In the world of Indian comics of the eighties and nineties, the ‘Angara Universe’, created by writer Parshuram Sharma under the banner of Tulsi Comics, was not limited to children’s entertainment, but also included conflicts between countries (Geopolitical Conflicts) and a strong voice of protest against foreign occupation.

The comic ‘Angara Ki Takkar’, which came right after the previous episode ‘Angara Ka Pujari’, is the turning point of this entire series, where such an explosive collision of politics, science, mythological magic, and vigorous action is seen that it does not give the reader even a moment to blink.

Bio-engineered villain ‘Charlie’s entry: the unique combination of modern powers and solar energy

The story begins where, after the mysterious death of the traitorous soldier Jackson, a dwarf named ‘Charlie’ emerges amidst poisonous smoke from a strange transmitter. Parshuram Sharma has created an anti-hero and villain in the form of Charlie, who, despite being smaller in stature, appears almost invincible technically and biologically.

Attacking with air pressure by absorbing energy from the air, understanding the language of animals and birds, and, above all, wearing an electric protective shield on his body that is unaffected by bullets and physical attacks—all these powers make Charlie an extremely advanced and modern super-villain. The author has shown here very wisely that when science falls into the wrong hands, it can take the form of such a destructive weapon that it becomes blinded by the arrogance of its own power.

Circus, magic, and the American president: Sanjuki’s past and Prince Tumba’s horror story

A major feature of the story of this comic is its cinematic style of connecting with the past (Flashback Technique). When General Sanjuki recognizes Charlie, the story takes the reader to the mysterious island of Prince Tumba, where the magician and scientist Tumba demonstrated his boundless powers to the American President.

Sanjuki’s humiliation at Charlie’s hands and the same fear returning to him several years later add a deep layer of mental stress to the story. The character of Prince Tumba represents imperialist forces that, behind the scenes, have the governments of countries overthrown. This story from the past elevates it above a simple comic into a Cold War-era detective and adventure-filled tale (Espionage Thriller) of considerable seriousness.

The counter to superpowers through scientific thinking: demonstrating Angara’s strategic understanding

Often in superhero comics, heroes defeat enemies solely on the basis of their physical strength, but here Angara discovers the weaknesses of Charlie’s armor through his intelligence and scientific understanding. Angara understands that Charlie’s electric shock works only if he remains in contact with the ground, i.e., through earthing (Earthing Circuit). He also learns that the source of Charlie’s true power is sunlight.

Using this scientific principle, Angara, with the help of Garuda ‘Jatayu’, gets Charlie lifted into the air and then directly imprisoned in the dark jaws of ‘Whale Rani’. The helplessness of an invincible bio-engineered demon when he did not receive sunlight proves how deeply logic and science were incorporated into Parshuram Sharma’s stories.

‘Trojan horse’-like trick: Sanjuki’s false submission and Tumba’s fall into the trap

The middle part of the story is a great example of the brilliant tactics of politics and psychological warfare. Angara makes Sanjuki falsely surrender instead of attacking Prince Tumba directly. This leads Tumba to believe that Angara has been killed and that his island is now ready to accept slavery.

This strategy is reminiscent of the famous ‘Trojan horse’ trick from the ancient Greek war, in which the enemy is drawn out of his safe haven by falsely assuring him of his victory. Prince Tumba’s entrance into the Raj Bhavan of Angara Island with his entire army and flag is the ultimate expression of his vanity, which the author has used to lay the foundation for the extremely tense climax.

Killer Justice and Raw-Pulp Action: That outspoken style of Tulsi Comics which is rarely seen today

In the climax, when Angara comes forward by breaking through the roof of Raj Bhavan, the action appears in its most dangerous and surreal form. Prince Tumba’s bullets are neutralized upon striking Angara’s tough, rhinoceros-like body. The island’s wild animals then crashing down on Tumba’s security personnel like hungry lions gives readers goosebumps.

The most shocking scene is where Angara, without any mercy or hesitation, tears Prince Tumba’s body into two parts with his bare hands. This outspoken and brutal justice of the pulp fiction of the nineties (Raw Justice) was the hallmark of Tulsi Comics, which has almost completely disappeared in today’s era of censorship and sanitization. This scene proves Angara to be not a superhero bound by the limits of law, but a ruthless protector of nature who roots out those who cast an evil eye on his land.

Pradeep Sathe’s artwork and visual pacing: A brilliant balance of scale and speed

Artist Pradeep Sathe’s drawings make this comic very special to look at. The way Sathe Ji has shown the difference in ‘scale’, i.e., the sizes of the characters, where on one side there are the huge Jatayu and Whale Rani floating in the deep sea, while on the other side there are the small Charlie and the strongly built Angara, creates great visual drama in the panels of the comic.

The fast-paced lines in the action scenes and the fear seen on the characters’ faces, especially when Tumba realizes that his death is near, demonstrate the power of Sathe Ji’s pencil. Even though the combination of colors was simple according to the technology of that era, its effect still feels equally deep and attractive.

Final evaluation and never-ending impact: Why is this confrontation with Angara still special?

The story ends on a very clever and thought-provoking turn. Charlie escapes with the help of teleportation technology after his boss’s death and leaves while threatening revenge in the future. This ending not only creates curiosity for the next comic, ‘Angara Khatre Mein’, but also shows that even if the masters of evil are eliminated, the dangerous weapons they create remain a serious threat to society for a long time.

‘Angara Ki Takkar’ is such a memorable creation from the golden era of Tulsi Comics that it teaches us that physical strength alone is not enough to protect the country; unwavering courage, scientific thinking, and difficult strategic decisions are also required. This comic is an experience for every serious comic lover and review reader that can never be forgotten.
