Can there be any person more unfortunate than a protector who has the power to save the entire universe, but when he is accused of killing his own people, his screams of innocence are suffocated and die in the deep silence of the ocean? Can a hero defeat, with the strength of his arms, the hatred that has flared up in his own mother’s eyes because of a conspiracy? In the nineties, when the Indian comics industry was in its golden age, Manoj Comics created an empire in the bottomless depths of the ocean, where the most painful battle of human emotions was being fought amidst the clashing of swords and the roar of waves. The comic arising from the collaboration of writer duo Mahendra and Sandeep and renowned artist Chandu presents such a poignant and breathtaking twist in the story of ‘Innocent’, the heroic hero of the aquatic empire, ‘Shark’, that it not only delivers thrills but also deeply moves the reader’s heart. It also leaves behind a deep pain of injustice, betrayal and the disintegration of affection.

Brother’s dead body and mother’s hatred: The scream of innocence of ‘Shark’ echoed through Jaldhar City

This story does not begin with the destruction of an ordinary villain, but rises directly from the burning pyre where relationships have been sacrificed. The very first scene of the comic stuns the reader when Shark steps into the royal court of Jaldhar City with the lifeless and bloody body of his younger brother, Achillecha, in his arms. He screams and says that he is innocent and that he has not taken the life of his younger brother, but the silence in the court proves to be sharper than any dagger. Rajmata Jamila, who until now would have sacrificed her life for both her sons, burns in such a fire of vengeance after seeing the dead body of her younger son that she does not trust Shark’s innocence at all. Here, the author has beautifully highlighted the psychology of family politics and misunderstandings, where a mother’s blind attachment and grief over her son do not even give her time to investigate the truth.

Greed for the throne and the ‘Sword of Tado’: The dreadful deal of aquatic sage Jarka

At the root of this entire conflict are the aquatic sages Jarka and Rajguru Prakchi, who are such vicious players in the game of power that their schemes combine the cunning of a fox with the poison of a scorpion. Jarka had carefully conspired to get Achillecha killed by Hunkar after turning him into the ‘Second Shark’ and placed the entire blame for this murder on the real Shark so that he would become a murderer in the eyes of the queen and be banished forever. Jarka’s greed is not limited to the throne of Jaldhar City; he makes a sinister deal with the cruelest and most monstrous demon of the ocean, ‘Snail’. Jarka wants the mysterious ‘Sword of Tado’, whose thirst for blood has not yet been quenched, and in return, he plots to hand over Jaldhar City and Shark to Snail. This trio of villains weaves such darkness into the story that it seems almost impossible even for a strong warrior like Shark to escape from it.

Rajnagar’s unsolved mystery: Mental Hospital, Inspector Wagle and Mansi’s painful secret

The greatest beauty of the story’s structure is that it does not remain confined to the bottom of the ocean, but suddenly draws readers to the streets and hospitals of Rajnagar on Earth. The presence of Inspector Wagle, who possesses cheetah-like agility and fox-like cunning, at Geetadevi Mental Hospital in Rajnagar lays the foundation for a separate mystery unfolding on land. The mental condition of a mysterious woman named Mansi, who is admitted to the hospital, is very critical. A young man named Pratap wants to embrace her, calling her his lost wife, but Mansi flatly refuses to recognize him. The mystery deepens when Mansi, in a hypnotic state, reaches the balcony of the tallest building in the hospital and, despite all of Inspector Wagle’s efforts to save her, falls and cries out painfully, ‘Forgive me, son.’ This scene gives the reader goosebumps, as it indicates that this human drama unfolding on land is somehow linked to Shark’s unresolved past and his true identity.

Bloody war in the deep sea: When Shark’s barbed mace rained blows on the horned Hunkar

On the one hand, while the conflicts of relationships and identity on land are not going away, on the other hand, Shark is wandering through the ocean in search of the truth with his loyal and understanding aquatic companion, the fish ‘Spark’. The action level in the story reaches its peak when Shark encounters a terrifying, horned green monster. This battle is not just a simple clash of punches and kicks, but here, even the waves of the ocean hear the call of their hero and hand him a barbed mace. The agility and aggression with which Shark responds to Hunkar’s attacks are a sight to behold. Spark’s loyalty and intelligence also win hearts in this battle, proving that sometimes those silent creatures who understand only the language of love and duty, without any selfishness, are more loyal than humans and aquatic humanoids.

Innocent lives hanging over daggers: Demon ‘Snail’s’ savage rampage in Jaldhar City

As soon as Shark somehow tries to understand the mystery of that cave after ending the threat, such a rampage of destruction begins in Jaldhar City that it would leave anyone stunned. The mighty Snail attacks Jaldhar City with his astonishing rays and demonic power and takes the innocent mermaids and aquatic creatures there hostage. Snail’s cruelty is such that he hangs those innocent civilians in the air with the help of a thin rope, just above hundreds of sharp daggers planted below. His intention is clear—as soon as Shark arrives there or the rope is cut, the entire aquatic population will fall onto those sharp daggers and bleed. This terrifying scene of terror and helplessness sends a shudder through the reader and arouses intense hatred towards the villain.

Breathtaking cliffhanger: Will the emperor of the sea be shattered on the rocks of death?

By the time we reach the climax, the pace of the story becomes stormy. When a dolphin conveys the news of the crisis in Jaldhar City to Shark, Shark, forgetting the curse placed upon him by his mother and the stigma attached to him, puts his life at stake solely to protect his subjects and motherland. He pounces on Snail at lightning speed so that the innocent people can be saved. His companion Spark cleverly drops huge rocks to dislodge those daggers, but an unexpected and devastating blow from Snail tosses Shark into the air. The comic ends on a very sinister cliffhanger, with Shark falling unconscious directly towards a pile of pointed daggers while Snail’s laughter echoes around him. The reader reaches this scene and is left standing breathless, wondering whether Shark’s body will be riddled with those daggers or whether a miracle will save him—the answer to which could only be found in the pages of the next comic, ‘Winner’.

Chandu’s magical artwork and immortal legacy: Why is this classic issue of Manoj Comics still special?

From the perspective of art and illustration, artist Chandu’s work breathes astonishing life into this comic. The movement of the hair floating underwater, the frightening body structures of the aquatic creatures, the passionate eyes of the mermaids and especially the low-angle and top-angle shots of Mansi falling from the roof of the hospital prove how much lifelike cinematic impact was created in that era using only brushes and colours, without any digital technology. In the dialogues, Mahendra and Sandeep have used powerful and impressive language that suits the majestic and mythological mood of the characters. ‘Innocent’ is not just an action comic, but it represents the era when the soul of stories in Indian comics resided in the deep emotions and tangled human relationships of their characters. This comic is an essential experience for every reader who wants to passionately experience the unmatched confluence of mystery, thrills, family drama and marine fantasy.
