In the history of Raj Comics and Tulsi Comics, the ‘Sarpasatra’ series (Sarpasatra, Sarpadvand, Sarpayug, Sarpakal) is considered the largest, most complex and most epic crossover in the Indian comics world. In this historic saga, Nagraj, the protector of Earth and Mahanagar, faces Tausi, the mighty emperor of the underworld. This story, written under the direction of Anupam Sinha, is not just a war between two superpowers, but also the fabric of a bloody conspiracy spanning the cultures of two vast snake worlds, their families and divine powers, from the underworld to Earth.

Presented below is a detailed analysis of the entire families, friends, gurus and villains associated with this great story of Nagraj and Tausi, described in complete detail and in a novelistic style.

Princess Visarpi of Nagadweep: Loyalty to love, Rajdharma and justice

Visarpi is the princess of Nagadweep, its future queen and the fiancée of Nagraj. In the Sarpasatra series, Visarpi’s character is portrayed not only as a beloved, but also as a highly intelligent, skilled strategist and just ruler. When a terrible, mysterious tsunami and earthquake submerge the entire Nagadweep underwater, Visarpi rescues all her snake citizens and provides them shelter in Mahanagar. The biggest challenge facing Visarpi comes when the blame for the destruction of Nagadweep falls on the underworld emperor Tausi.

Visarpi follows the ancient Nyaya tradition of Nagadweep rather than simply being swept away by a spirit of revenge. When Tausi is seriously prosecuted in the Mahanagar court for drowning Nagadweep and no one is ready to take his side, Visarpi herself comes forward and becomes Tausi’s advocate. She proves that no one can be held guilty unless there is direct evidence of the crime and malicious intent behind it. Visarpi’s understanding of justice and her later arrival on the battlefield with her sceptre during the crisis in the underworld make her the most respected heroine of this entire saga.

Dada Vedacharya: Tilism Martanda, Guru of Nagraj and patron of the clan

Dada Vedacharya, who showed the way to Nagraj and Bharti while living in Mahanagar, is the greatest expert in Tantra, astrology and Tilism. He is not only the spiritual and tantric guru of Nagraj, but also becomes his shield in every crisis, like a grandfather. In the Sarpasatra series, when Mahanagar is attacked by poisonous snakes from the underworld, Dada Vedacharya takes responsibility for protecting the entire city with his magical powers. He comes to know through his divine sadhana that a terrible, untoward incident is written in the horoscopes of Nagraj and Mahanagar, to avoid which Nagraj will have to leave Mahanagar for some time. When Nagraj comes close to death due to an infection caused by underworld poison, Dada Vedacharya sustains his life through Panchakarma and Tilismi processes. The biggest mystery of this saga is also related to the life of Dada Vedacharya, when he comes to know that the revered Nagababa of Patal is none other than the spiritual consciousness of his own estranged son, Shiladitya.

Bharti: Infinite human support and alert sentinel of Mahanagar

Bharti is Nagraj’s closest friend, a leading journalist in Rajnagar/Mahanagar and the director of ‘Bharti News Channel’. Without any supernatural powers, Bharti is the strongest support in Nagraj’s life solely because of her intelligence, courage and human emotions. When people’s anger flares up against snakes in Mahanagar and a petition is filed in court to ban the entry of snakes, Bharti brings out the truth through her media power and impartial journalism. Understanding Nagraj’s state of mind, she inspires him to make the right decision. When a web of misunderstandings spreads between Tausi and Nagraj, Bharti becomes the first link in the chain of people searching for clues about the conspirators hiding everywhere, from the streets of Mahanagar to its secret basements.

Mahatma Kaaldoot: Immortal great warrior and protector of Nagadweep

Mahatma Kaaldoot is the most senior, revered and powerful great warrior of Nagadweep. His power, anger and mace attacks are famous throughout all three worlds. When Nagadweep is submerged underwater, Kaaldoot takes responsibility for protecting the refugees into his own hands. The terrifying form of Kaaldoot can be seen during his conflict with Tausi. When Tausi starts weakening the warriors of Nagadweep with his hypnotic and Ashtadhwaj powers, Mahatma Kaaldoot himself stands in front of Tausi like Yamraj. The wrestling match between the two mighty warriors shakes the boundaries of Earth and the underworld. Every step taken by Kaaldoot is dedicated solely to preserving the honour of the Naga race and protecting Nagraj.

Sheetnag Kumar: Lord of snow powers and a companion like Nagraj’s own brother

Sheetnag Kumar is a very brilliant warrior of Nagadweep and one of the most trusted companions of Nagraj. He has the unique power to control snow, bring temperatures down to zero and create icy weapons. When Nagraj becomes unconscious after being infected with the deadly Garla poison of Patal, it is Sheetnag Kumar who slows down the spread of the poison in Nagraj’s body with the help of his cold protective shield and Rudraksha powers. He chases the killers from Patal, from the metro stations to the deep waters of Lake Lubna, to protect Mahanagar and finally fights on the front lines on behalf of Nagraj in the battle of Cobra Valley.

Nagu (Naagu): A loyal companion of Nagraj, a snake with Mani Shakti and a true sacrifice of ‘Sarpasatra’

In the universe of Raj Comics, Nagu is not just one of the millions of tiny snakes living in Nagraj’s body, but also a very unique, playful and loyal character among the shape-shifting Manidhari snakes. He is known for his particularly funny nature, filmi dialogues and willingness to put his life at stake for Nagraj even in the most difficult situations. In the ‘Sarpasatra’ Mahagatha (Sarpasatra, Sarpadvanda, Sarpayuga, Sarpakal), written by Anupam Sinha, Nagu’s role is not just that of a helper, but he emerges as the central link in the biggest mystery, sacrifice and liberation of this entire great war.

A divine gem shines on Nagu’s forehead, giving him unique hypnotic powers, the ability to change form and the power to release illusory rays. At the beginning of the Sarpasatra series, when Nagraj moves away from Mahanagar due to the crisis that arises after the sinking of Nagadweep, Nagu becomes the loyal companion who does not leave Mahanagar defenceless.

Nagu himself takes the exact form of Nagraj and guards the streets of Mahanagar for an entire month, so that the criminals and residents of Mahanagar do not even get a clue that their true protector is not in the city. Posing as Nagraj, he confronts the poisonous killers, Garla and her companions, who have come from the underworld. However, Nagu’s mind becomes confused due to the unique poison and tantric waves of Patal, which makes Dada Vedacharya and Bharti realise that the Nagraj active in Mahanagar is not the real Nagraj, but an illusory form of him.

Entry into the underworld and the terrible struggle of ‘Maya Darpan’

When the real Nagraj enters the depths of the underworld and becomes trapped in the web of underworld poison and conspirators, Nagraj’s tiny snakes and his spiritual consciousness become trapped inside a tantric picture called ‘Maya Darpan’, which is then shattered into many pieces. At that time, only Nagu shows the courage to save Nagraj in the darkest parts of the underworld.

Nagu crosses the difficult paths of the underworld and reaches the mysterious room where the pieces of Nagraj’s picture are scattered. There, he encounters Patal Bhairavi, Patal’s most dangerous tantric witch. Patal Bhairavi attacks Nagu with her Kali Maya to stop him and erase Nagraj’s existence once and for all. Risking his life, Nagu endures the terrible attacks of Patal Bhairavi, defeats her with his Mani Shakti and gives new life to his lord Nagraj by combining all the scattered pieces of Nagraj’s portrait one by one.

Saudangi: Shape-shifting serpent and faithful protector

Saudangi is a very powerful shape-shifting serpent who lives inside Nagraj’s body and emerges to fight when the time comes. She is completely devoted to Nagraj and can go to any extent to save his life. Near Lubna Lake, when Trimund and the Garla snakes of the underworld surround Nagraj from all sides and trap him in a deadly net of poison, Saudangi emerges and captures those demons in her enormous serpent form. In that bloody battle, Saudangi endures the suicidal blasts from Patal on her body and is seriously injured. Her sacrifice is proof of her unwavering loyalty towards Nagraj.

Panchnag Army: Five Maharathi warriors of Nagadweep

Nagraj’s Panchnag Army consists of divine warriors such as Nagarjuna, Vyaghranaga, Pishachanaga, Sinhanaga and Vajranaga. All these warriors are masters of different special powers. Nagarjuna is known for his infallible poison arrows and mastery of archery, Vyaghranaga possesses tiger-like agility and claws, while Pishachanaga is able to withstand illusory and tantric powers. While Tausi is wreaking havoc in Mahanagar with his hypnotic and magnetic powers, the five Nagas together surround Tausi near the metro railway track and force him to retreat with their combined serpent power.

Sage Astik: Ascetic of Cobra Valley and priest of Sarpasatra

Rishi Astik is a great sage from the Mahabharata period who, in ancient times, protected the Naga race by stopping King Janamejaya’s Sarpa Satra Yagya. He performs penance while staying in his ashram in Cobra Valley in Patal. When the war between Nagraj and Tausi spirals out of control and Tausi’s anger threatens to burn the entire creation to ashes, Sage Astik is forced to begin the ancient ‘Sarpasatra Yagya’ once again to save Nagraj and protect the laws of the underworld. Rishi Astik’s knowledge, restraint and mantra powers play an important role in maintaining the right balance in this great story.

Apsara alias Sri: Empress of the underworld, Tausi’s life partner and goddess of compassion

Apsara is the wife of the underworld emperor Tausi and the empress of the underworld. She is not only a goddess of beauty and grace, but also a very powerful shape-shifting serpent. Her father, Senapati Trinadhar, was the commander of Sarpadesh. The love story of Apsara and Tausi is counted among the most sacred love stories of the underworld. The entire conflict of the Sarpasatra series begins when Apsara suddenly leaves the underworld and travels to Bhuloka, or Mahanagar.

In fact, Apsara realises that the life of Nagraj of Bhuloka is in danger because of a deadly poisonous conspiracy originating in Patal. Risking her life, she comes to Mahanagar to protect an innocent being and prevent her husband Tausi from becoming a partner in this sin. Here, she searches for the truth while living under the identity of Advocate Veni Tirumala. Apsara’s character is that of a queen who puts her own life in danger for the honour of her husband, the truth and the balance of the entire universe.

Tani: The brilliant and mighty son of Tausi and Apsara

Tani is the only son of the underworld emperor Tausi and Empress Apsara, as well as the future crown prince of the underworld. Since childhood, Tani has possessed immense powers like his father, Tausi, and the noble values of his mother. He is learning advanced weaponry and sadhana while staying in the ashram of Rishiraj Vulture, situated on Mount Aakhot in the underworld. When the conspirators G-18 and Kalachakra attack Tani at the ashram to mentally break Tausi and attempt to kidnap him, Tani single-handedly teaches those illusory demons a lesson. Tani’s safety is both the biggest weakness and the greatest strength of Tausi’s life.

Nagbaba: The revered master of Tausi and guardian of the underworld

Nagbaba is the greatest spiritual master of the underworld, Tausi’s guide and the guardian of the entire magical world of Patal. Nagbaba’s body may appear serpent-like in the underworld, but the spiritual mystery hidden within him is very deep. It is he who gives Tausi the knowledge of shape-shifting powers, Ashtadhwaj and dignity. When the wrath of the eternal demonic forces in the underworld intensifies, Nagbaba enters the delicate process of shedding his ancient skin. In the end, the mystery is revealed that Nagbaba had actually contained within himself the consciousness of Shiladitya, the son of Bhuloka’s Dada Vedacharya, who had entered Jeevit Samadhi to keep the existence of the underworld stable.

Rishiraj Vulture: Divine ascetic of Mount Aakhot and guru of Tani

Rishiraj Vulture, who lives in an ashram amid the poisonous ocean on Mount Aakhot, is a highly knowledgeable and accomplished ascetic. He is the greatest guru of the Garuda and Pakshi clans. It is he who has taught Tausi’s son Tani the rare knowledge of the universe while keeping him under his supervision. When a civil war-like situation arises in the underworld and Nagraj unknowingly reaches Mount Aakhot in search of Tani, Rishiraj Vulture stands in front of Nagraj like a wall that is not easy to break. His divine vision and Garuda powers contribute significantly to maintaining the balance of the underworld.

Kalu Djinn: Tausi’s most faithful servant and lord of the air element

Kalu Djinn is the oldest, most loyal and most powerful companion of the underworld emperor Tausi. He is the prince of the Djinn clan and the master of the powers of the air element. Kalu Djinn can increase the size of his body until it is as large as a mountain, create windstorms and render any enemy lifeless by drawing the air out of their lungs. When Tausi is controlled through a nanochip and hypnosis, Kalu Djinn follows and protects Tausi himself, putting his own life at stake to foil the conspirators’ schemes.
